Diversity in Action

At Gilbert + Tobin, our ability to innovate and succeed for our clients is a result of our people and the culture of the firm which encourages participation, strategic thinking and contribution irrespective of your role or level.

As a member of the Diversity Council of Australia, we strive to achieve diversity in a changing community and legislative environment.

Our commitment to diversity is particularly demonstrated through the following initiatives:

  • Women in Leadership
  • Flexibility
  • OUT – our LGBTI community
  • Reconciliation Action Plan

Women in Leadership

The firm boasts the highest percentage of female partners (37%) of all Australian law firms, based on The Australian Financial Review Partnership Survey and The Australian’s End of Financial Year Survey, both conducted in June 2012. A very high proportion of our firm’s leadership team are also female and women are represented on our board .

Gilbert + Tobin is an equal opportunity employer. In 2010, 2011, and, again, for 2012 and 2013 the firm was awarded an Employer of Choice for Women citation from the Equal Opportunity for Women in the Workplace Agency (EOWA).

‘At G+T, we believe that the diversity in our society should be reflected in the organisation and that our business will be more successful if women are represented through all levels of the firm. It is for this reason we have provided a working environment that encourages full female participation and why we’re delighted to be named an Employer of Choice for Women.’

Danny Gilbert, Managing Partner

Flexibility

We have established an inclusive workplace at Gilbert +Tobin by recognising and accommodating many employees’ individual circumstances. Our view is that flexibility is beneficial to our firm and our people, leading to increased performance and productivity, and the retention and engagement of experienced people.

We offer flexible work arrangements ranging from part-time work, to job sharing and remote working opportunities. We also look after the health and well-being of our staff by providing fresh fruit daily on each floor, fitness activities at various times in each location, corporate gym rates, and in Sydney an in-house café, which is a great place to take a break with fellow colleagues.

OUT – our LGBTI community

OUT is Gilbert + Tobin’s LBGTI and allies group. OUT’s objective is to ensure that Gilbert + Tobin continues to celebrate diversity, including for all LGBTI staff, as a core value of the firm.

Gilbert + Tobin is a proud member of Pride in Diversity, Australia’s leading workplace program for inclusion of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and intersex (LBGTI) employees.

“At Gilbert + Tobin I feel accepted and celebrated for being exactly who I am. I’ve always been open about my sexuality and at G+T I’m definitely not alone. We have many out and proud employees and partners across all areas of the firm who have come together with our straight allies to form the firm’s LGBTI diversity group, OUT.”

Angela McDonald, Lawyer

Reconciliation Action Plan

At Gilbert + Tobin, we value the cultural diversity of our people and we are committed to investing in the future of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Australians.

As part of our Reconciliation Action Plan we have made a series of public commitments to contribute to the success of Indigenous Australians. We believe that offering stimulating and ongoing employment is one of the most powerful ways that the firm can achieve this goal. Since 2008, we have recruited Indigenous Cadets and continue to be committed to this vital program.
