High-profile clients

Our international and domestic client base includes large corporate and multinational companies in all industry sectors, as well as governments and regulators. Our clients include BlueScope Steel, BP Australia, Commonwealth Bank,  Country Road, Foxtel, Google,  Macquarie Group, Nine Entertainment Co., Samsung, Telstra,  Virgin Australia, Westpac and Woolworths Limited.

International exposure

At Gilbert + Tobin, it’s likely that a significant proportion of your time will involve working on cross-border transactions and domestic deals in other jurisdictions as well as in Australia. As a result of our international work commitments, the opportunity for travel is available to most of our lawyers. We also offer a range of international secondment opportunities to other leading independant corporate law firms around the world.

Large, yet personal

We have over 500 professionals working in our Sydney, Melbourne and Perth offices. And as a young firm, we’re not constrained by tradition, so we’re always open to change and ideas for improvement. You’ll mix with friendly people and will benefit from high morale within a firm that values individuality and diversity. We pride ourselves on treating everyone equally across the firm and providing a supportive environment.

At Gilbert + Tobin you really do get the best of both worlds. Our size works to your advantage because you benefit from a cohesive team structure where your contribution to the firm – on a work and social level – will really be noticed and can make a difference. Our broad client base and work opportunities mean that you will also be able to work on cutting-edge deals with some of the biggest clients and best legal minds in Australia and the world.

We have some of the most talented lawyers in the market. Our people are consistently ranked at the top of the legal industry by independent commentators and are supported internally by a culture that values creativity and commitment. In 2014, 41 Gilbert + Tobin partners were named in the Best Lawyers Australia list across 24 areas of law. Among these, eight were named Best Lawyers’ 2014 Lawyer of the Year.

Culturally, G+T is unique. Diversity is part of our DNA and we have a long history of celebrating people’s individuality and in being  a leader in diversity.  It’s not just about being better people. It’s a business issue because we attract more people to work for us, we keep them longer and clients ‘like to like’ the people they are dealing with.

We value employees from all backgrounds and our attitude to diversity extends to the opportunities and challenges we offer. A culture like G+T’s which embraces people also fosters an environment where people feel able to contribute fully.

Great training and investment in our people

Our lawyers are equipped with the technical skills and professional knowledge required to provide our clients with the best possible advice and support. All our lawyers take part in a tailored learning and development program, and each year we award a scholarship of up to $10,000 to a lawyer wishing to attend an international conference or study at any educational institution in the world. In 2013, we awarded two such scholarships: one for a lawyer to undertake a subject for her Masters at Clare College, Cambridge studying Advanced Obligations and Remedies; and the other to attend a 10-day course on Current Trends in Intellectual Property Law and Technology Commercialisation, at the University of California, Berkeley in July.

Outstanding pro bono work

Pro bono is at the cultural heart of Gilbert + Tobin and is a dedicated practice group led by a Partner. As pro bono pioneers (we were the first law firm to employ a full-time pro bono lawyer) we are committed to helping disadvantaged clients who don’t have access to the justice system or don’t qualify for legal aid. All lawyers have the opportunity to work alongside our now three full-time pro bono lawyers and assist our clients who are most in need. We encourage all staff to get involved in one of our pro bono or CSR activities.

Corporate Social Responsibility

As part of our corporate social responsibility agenda, we are committed to a number of activities to make a difference within our firm and to the wider community. Our CSR programs focus on three streams – reconciliation, community programs and the environment.

We are committed to employing Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Australians in our firm as part of our Reconciliation Action Plan.  We provide employment opportunities in a number of ways.
